When sunlight hits a solar cell, it knocks electrons loose from their atoms. This movement of electrons creates an electrical current. Most modern solar panels are made of silicon and are installed on rooftops or in large "solar farms." Because they have no moving parts, they are incredibly durable and require very little maintenance.
